Created and hosted by singer songwriter Beth Portman, Birdie on a Branch is an intimate monthly music night (2nd Thursday) that celebrates the human voice and features local singer songwriters and vocalists both emerging and experienced.  Come for dinner, a latte, glass of wine or a sweet treat and check out the many talented performers hopping on the branch to share their songs. Evening typically includes two sets: 20 minute opener and 45 minute feature.  Show your appreciation by leaving a donation in our painted bird houses.

Our next Birdie on a Branch is March 14th. Since March 8th is International Women's Day we wanted to present strong women with their own unique voices. Our featured Birdie is Kat Zel with Lara Yule Singh opening for her. ”

Featured Birdie, Kat Zel

Kat Zel is 18 years old and finishing her last year at Bev Facey High School in Sherwood Park. There, Kat has been a passionate participant in the Singer Song Writer Program. Regularly, she can be found collaborating with fellow students to make musical magic for their many performances. Kat plays electric and acoustic guitar, sings and song writes.

In  2018, her band was nominated for the Edmonton Music Awards - in the Rising Star and People's Choice Category. Kat developed her passion for music by listening to her Dad's records and CDs from the 60's to the 90's. Groups that inspire her are The Cranberries, Jefferson Airplane and Nirvana. While integrating some of their vocal techniques into her singing, she's also developing a sound of her own. CBC Music Challenge called her voice 'psychedelic' while comparing it to that of Janis Joplin.

Opening Birdie, Lara Yule Singh

This will be Lara's third time playing for Birdie on a Branch. She will be sharing new material from her exploration of atmospheric futuristic folk tales. A sensitive and articulate performer, Lara's songs are cinematic, visceral, adventurous, and unflinchingly honest. Come into her universe.

"An experimental folk journey that is as refreshing as a warm bath." Jamie Reinhart - Vue Magazine
